(213) Enjoy the Silence

These last two days have been quite strange. After not waking up until 7:00 on Thursday morning, the last two mornings I was up much earlier — 4:20 on Friday and 3:45 today. What I found myself doing was spending time meditating on the lanai in these early hours, as I was wide awake and it seemed like the best thing to do. Both mornings have been incredibly still, with a white cloud-covered sky and nothing buzzing but air conditioner units. I have been praying and meditating and contemplating the changes coming, as well as deeply enjoying the silence.

Later in the morning, a friend of mine posted these words on our writing circle page:

Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Can’t you understand?
Oh my little girl
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

I wasn’t paying much attention, and I thought she had written them because, well, she is a great writer. Turns out they were written by Martin Lee Gore, and performed by Depeche Mode. I was never a follower of that band, and the only words I recognize are “all I ever wanted, all I ever needed.” But never mind that. The fact is that these lyrics create a real see-saw effect — which is somewhat evident in the music. The words seem simplistic in a way, but then something pulls it out — I guess it is the unusual rhyme scheme. And the ultimate message about words and the violence they can bring is direct and necessary. I wish more people would take heed of this message in this noisy world.
It is August 1st, and this summer has been one for the record books when it comes to loud and aggressive speech. Just think: Charleston shootings, Confederate Flag, KKK, Gay Marriage Ruling, Sandra Bland, Planned Parenthood, Cecil the Lion, Jeb, Huckabee, and (God help us) Donald Trump. This summer has been a shout-out to all that has been festering below the surface. And I think it will only get crazier.
But it is quiet today, and I am grateful. My writing circle partner who posted the lyrics is grateful as well. Enjoy the silence my friends. It won’t last.
