(145) Will You Wake from Your Dream?

This is a found poem I wrote from Elvis Costello’s “Veronica.” I never knew what the song was about until I watched the video — after I wrote this poem, painted mostly from Costello’s lyrics with a few tweaks.

Will you wake from your dream?

She is on a ship on the sea

gone to hide

a carefree mind of her own

a delicate look in her eye.

Sixty five years ago.

A place in the dark

to sit very quiet and still

bones of last week’s news

Will you wake from your dream?

Then she laughs at those who

steal her clothes

a devilish look in her eye.

She laughs at those

who shout her name

and then…

closed her eyes upon your world

sixty-five years ago.

When will you wake from your dream?
