I see this Royal Poinciana every day when I arrive at work. It is so brilliantly beautiful and the sun shines on it just right. Today it went with these words from David Bowie:
I can remember
Standing by the wall
And the guns shot above our heads
and we kissed,
as though nothing could fall
And the shame was on the other side
Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever
Then we could be Heroes
Just for one day.
I had heard this song while driving to work, and when I connected the lyrics to that stunning red tree I knew once again that those of us who live in the realities of public education are Heroes. Sometimes it does feel like we are shot at, but when we are with our students doing great work, it is like a kiss. Just like the tree, we stand brilliant and strong. We know the shame is on the other side. And I pray that someday they will own it.
